The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) Scheme is an initiative by the Ministry of Education (MoE), Department of School Education & Literacy, Government of India. This scheme is designed to identify and support talented students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds by providing them with financial assistance to continue their education.

Examination Overview:

The NMMS examination is conducted in a single stage and aims to select candidates based on a district quota system. The examination is divided into two parts:

Important Dates:

  1. Application Submission:
    • Online application submission by candidates: 01.08.2024 to 31.08.2024
    • Submission of hard copies in schools by students: 01.08.2024 to 31.08.2024
  2. School Submission:
    • Submission of countersigned hard copies by Headmasters/Headmistresses to the DEOs (online and offline): 08.09.2024
  3. Validation:
    • Validation of Application Forms by District Education Office: 25.09.2024
  4. Admit Card Download:
    • The download of Admit Cards by the Candidates: 27.11.2024 to 01.12.2024
  1. Mental Ability Test (MAT):
    • Consists of 90 multiple-choice questions.
    • Questions will focus on reasoning and critical thinking, including analogy, classification, numerical series, and hidden figures.
    • Total marks: 90
    • Time allotted: 90 minutes.
  2. Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT):
    • Consists of 90 multiple-choice questions.
    • Questions will cover subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Political Science, Geography, and Economics.
    • Total marks: 90
    • Time allotted: 90 minutes.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Educational Qualification: Students in Class VIII in Government, Government-aided, or Local Body Schools are eligible.
  • Academic Performance: Students must have secured at least 55% marks in their Class VII Annual Examination (with a 5% relaxation for reserved categories).
  • Parental Income: The total annual income of the student’s parents from all sources should not exceed Rs. 3,50,000 (Rupees Three Lakh Fifty Thousand) only.
  • Exclusions: Students enrolled in Government residential schools such as Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Kendriya Vidyalaya, and other similar institutions where the government covers educational expenses are not eligible for this scheme.

State Quota for Odisha:

Odisha has a total quota of 3314 scholarships distributed across 30 districts, with reservations for SC, ST, SEBC, and Physically Handicapped candidates.

Examination Fee:

Candidates are not required to pay any examination fees.

Medium of Examination:

The NMMS examination will be conducted in Odia.

Scholarship Details:

  • Selected candidates will receive a scholarship of Rs. 1000 per month for four years (from Class IX to XII), subject to satisfactory academic performance and their continuance in eligible Government or Government-aided institutions.
